REG-301

AI Systems in Regulated Industries

Audit trails, PII handling, model risk management, and the political work of shipping LLM systems inside organizations that have to produce evidence.

REG-301 — AI Systems in Regulated Industries
ABOUT THIS COURSE

What you will learn.

The hardest place to ship an LLM system is not on stage at a conference; it is at a regulated financial institution, a healthcare system, or a government agency. The technical work is roughly the same. The political and procedural work — auditability, model risk reviews, lineage, PII boundaries, vendor management — is what determines whether anything ever ships.

This six-week course is the only Solutech program dedicated to the regulated-industry context. We cover model risk management as a working practice, the documentation that holds up to internal audit and external regulator review, PII handling and minimization, audit-grade logging and lineage, vendor and provider management under risk-controlled procurement, and a working method for getting a project across the finish line inside an organization that is rightly cautious. The capstone is a complete model risk dossier for a system of your choice.

This course is taught by a distinguished engineer who has shipped AI systems inside one of the largest banks in the world. It does not promise to make your regulator happy; it teaches you how to be the engineer who can.

WHAT YOU’LL BUILD

Four substantial projects.

Project 01

A model risk dossier

Produce the full documentation a model risk officer would expect to see for a real system.

Project 02

A PII-handling design

Design a PII boundary for your system, including minimization, masking, and retention rules.

Project 03

An audit-grade logging design

Define the events, retention, and lineage required to reconstruct any historical decision.

Project 04

A vendor risk assessment

Conduct a structured risk assessment of a model provider you depend on.

CURRICULUM

Week by week.

FIT

Who this is for — and who it is not.

For you if

  • Engineers and tech leads at banks, insurers, healthcare, and government agencies.
  • Staff engineers being asked to be the AI counterparty to a risk function.
  • Engineers at AI vendors selling into regulated buyers.

Probably not for you if

  • Engineers in unregulated SaaS where this overhead does not yet apply.
  • People looking for a pure-technical deep dive — this is technical-and-procedural.
  • Auditors and compliance professionals without engineering background; this is for engineers.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Taught by an operator.

Distinguished Engineer

Sofia Bernal

Sofia is a distinguished engineer at a global investment bank and chairs the firm’s AI governance review. She teaches the rare elective on shipping LLM systems inside organizations where “move fast” is replaced by “produce evidence.” Her students leave knowing how to argue with a model risk officer and win — which is, increasingly, the bottleneck for shipping anything useful.
